Welcome to dSLR Basics

The purpose of this website is to inform and, hopefully, amuse to some extent those who are new to the world of digital Single Lens Reflex (dSLR) photography. Our approach is informal and non-technical (as much as possible, we can't help you with your photography without talking about f stops, shutter speeds, focal lengths etc.). Whether you've bought a dSLR because you want to get better quality pictures than you were getting from your compact camera or because you want to get creative with your photography and embark on a new hobby, we've got something here for you.

The site is divided into sections (see navigation bar at the top).

Tutorials:

  • dSLR Tutorials: This section covers the basic principles of photography, the things that every photographer must learn. Numbered T1 to T7 it's advisable to view them in order but feel free to jump to any article you need advice on.
  • How to shoot...: Shooting advice relating to specific situations. Whether you've been asked to shoot a wedding or you just want some tips on how best to take portraits, landscapes, a football game or one of the many other situations we'll be featuring, we're here to help. Which lens to use, which aperture and shutter speed settings to select and other advice particular to the job at hand.
  • Creative Techniques: Here's where photography really starts to get fun. There are things you can do with a dSLR that produce very different and striking final images. We'll show you how to use techniques such as long exposures, mixing flash with ambient light, HDR and many others to produce extra ordinary images.

Buying:

  • Buying Advice: Down to earth, non-biased, practical advice based on our experiences. Not actually bought a dSLR yet? Which is best for you? Looking to buy a tripod, kit bag, a new lens? We'll cut through the hype and the sales pitch and tell you what the important features are and which are just gimmicks.
  • Where to Buy: So you've decided which particular piece of kit you want, but where's the best place to buy it? We'll be looking at the major UK on-line retailers and comparing ease of use, customer service and, of course, price!
  • Essential Accessories: Camera bags are full of lots of little pockets and pouches for a reason. Here we'll give you a run down of what accessories you need and why.

Links:

  • Video Links: We'll be producing some buying advice and tutorial videos of our own and showcasing other interesting and informative videos we find.
  • Best of flickr: What better way to improve your photography than study the work of others. Mainly amateur photographers, just like you. When we come across a photostream that stands out from the crowd, we'll share that find with you.
  • Inspirational Images: Mainly pro photographer sites. Something to aspire to or just admire in ore. A lot of these sites will offer the facility for you to purchase fine art prints.
  • Other Links: A collection of useful links. Manufacturer's websites, expert reviewers etc.
